Types of Alimony/Spousal Support in Florida
Recently, the Florida legislature has made changes in alimony law. This new law now provides statutory guidelines for what is considered a short-term, moderate-term or long-term marriage. This is important for purposes of determining the type of alimony a spouse can receive.
- Marriages less than seven years are considered "short-term"
- Marriages greater than seven but less than 17 are considered "moderate-term"
- Marriages 17 years or more are considered "long-term"
Only long-term marriages can be considered for " permanent" alimony. The other types of alimony are as follows:
- Durational: Only for moderate -term marriages, the length of the marriage determines the maximum duration for alimony.
- Rehabilitative: This type of alimony is for those who need alimony to receive further education or vocational training in order to eventually support him- or herself.
- Bridge-the-gap alimony: Assists a spouse who needs alimony for a shorter period of time and in order to just get back on his or her feet.
